How to Choose an Online Yoga Instructor: 8 Things to Check Before You Pay

Anyone can make a yoga reel, and anyone can call themselves a yoga instructor. When you practise at home with a teacher on a screen, the teacher's training and attention are the only things standing between a pose that helps you and a pose that hurts you. So it is worth spending ten minutes checking before you pay.

Here is the checklist I would give a friend who asked me how to choose a yoga instructor online.

1. Real yoga qualifications

Yoga has formal qualifications, and a serious teacher will happily tell you theirs. In India, look for a university degree in yoga (a BSc, MSc or MA), the UGC NET in yoga, or a certification from the Yoga Certification Board under the Ministry of AYUSH. Short online courses are a start, but they are not the same as years of study in anatomy, asanas, pranayama and yoga therapy.

Ask for the name of the institution and the year. A teacher with real credentials will not mind.

2. Their own practice

A good instructor still practises. Competition medals, judging experience or years of personal practice show that they understand the poses from the inside, not only from a textbook.

3. They can actually see you

This is the most important point for online yoga. Ask whether cameras are on and whether the instructor corrects students during class. If the class has 80 people, the honest answer is that nobody is watching your form. A small batch, ideally 12 or fewer, lets the teacher check each person.

4. They ask about your health first

Before your first class, a responsible yoga instructor asks about injuries, back or knee pain, blood pressure, PCOD or thyroid, recent surgery and pregnancy. They use that to give you safer versions of poses. If nobody asks, nobody is planning around your body.

5. They teach in a language you think in

Small cues matter: "push the floor away", "soften your shoulders". If you follow instructions faster in Hindi, a Hindi-speaking instructor will help you move correctly sooner.

6. Honest promises

Be careful of anyone who promises an exact number of kilos, guaranteed results or that yoga will fix a medical condition. Bodies are different. A trustworthy instructor tells you what usually improves with regular practice and measures your progress honestly.

7. You can try before you pay

A free trial of real, live classes tells you more than any review. You will know within a few days whether the teacher's style, the timing and the batch suit you.

8. You feel comfortable

You will be on camera, often in fitted clothes, sometimes struggling with a pose. Many women prefer a female yoga instructor and a women-only batch for exactly this reason. Choose the setting where you can relax.

About me

I am Latika. I hold an MA in Yoga from Jain Vishva Bharati, Ladnun, I am NET qualified in yoga, and I have won a national gold medal in yoga along with more than 20 medals at district and state level. I have also been a panelist at more than five yoga competitions. I teach live online classes to women in batches of at most 12, in Hindi, with cameras on so I can correct every student.

Frequently asked questions

What qualification should an online yoga instructor have?

In India, a degree in yoga (BSc, MSc or MA), the UGC NET in yoga, or a Yoga Certification Board certificate from the Ministry of AYUSH are strong signs of real training. Ask for the institution and year.

Is a personal online yoga instructor better than a group class?

A personal 1:1 session gives you full attention and timing that suits you. A small group batch gives most of that attention at a lower cost, plus the motivation of practising with others. With a large group you lose both.

Can an online yoga instructor correct my posture?

Yes, if your camera is on, the batch is small and the instructor actively watches. Place your phone so your whole body is visible.

Where can I find a female yoga instructor online?

Yoga with Latu is taught by Latika, a woman yoga teacher with an MA in Yoga and NET qualification, in women-only live batches.
