Many women with PCOD say their weight just won’t come down, however hard they try. That is not your fault. In PCOD, hormones and insulin affect how the body handles weight, so small daily habits you can keep up work better than a crash diet.

This article is information, not treatment. Keep your PCOD treatment going with your gynaecologist, and make any big change to medicine, diet or supplements only after asking your doctor.

Why losing weight feels harder with PCOD

  • In many women with PCOD, insulin does not work as well as it should (insulin resistance). This increases sugar cravings and makes the body store fat more easily.
  • Hormonal imbalance brings tiredness and mood swings, and when you are tired, exercise is the first thing to slip.
  • Stress and poor sleep increase hunger.
  • That is why weight comes back after two weeks of a strict diet. The habits you can keep for months are the ones that work.

The good news is that doctors often say even a little weight loss can help PCOD symptoms and periods. You don’t need to reach some ideal number, you just need to keep moving in the right direction.

How to lose weight with PCOD: step by step

  1. Start with your doctorTalk to your doctor about your reports, thyroid and sugar tests. If you also have a thyroid condition, read yoga for thyroid.
  2. Move 5 days a week30 to 50 minutes of yoga a day, plus a 20-minute brisk walk if you can. Being regular matters more than doing a lot on one day.
  3. Protein and fibre in every mealDal, paneer, curd, chana, eggs or sprouts, with vegetables and salad. You stay full for longer and think about sweets less.
  4. Less sugar and packaged foodCut down on cold drinks, sweets, biscuits and maida slowly. Stopping everything at once makes cravings stronger.
  5. Full sleep, at the same time each night7 to 8 hours of sleep. Late nights on the phone upset both sleep and hunger.
  6. 10 minutes a day for stressAnulom Vilom, Bhramari or Shavasana. Less stress means less binge eating.

A 30-minute daily yoga plan for PCOD weight loss

  1. Warm-up (5 minutes)Gentle movement of the neck, shoulders, back and knees to warm the body up.
  2. Surya Namaskar (8 to 10 minutes)4 to 8 slow rounds with the breath. At the start, even 2 rounds are enough. See the 12 steps of Surya Namaskar.
  3. Malasana and Baddha Konasana (3 minutes)For the hips and pelvic area. If your heels don’t reach the floor in Malasana, put a folded towel under them.
  4. Setu Bandhasana and Bhujangasana (4 minutes)Strengthen the lower belly, back and hips. Hold each pose for 3 to 5 breaths.
  5. Naukasana (2 minutes)For the core. Start with the easier bent-knee version, and skip it if your back hurts.
  6. Anulom Vilom and Bhramari (5 minutes)To ease stress and restlessness. Kapalbhati only after your doctor and teacher say yes, and not during periods.
  7. Shavasana (3 minutes)Close your eyes and let the body rest completely.

What to keep in mind about food

  • Fill half the plate with vegetables and salad, a quarter with protein like dal or paneer, and a quarter with roti or rice.
  • Choose atta, bajra, jowar or ragi instead of maida.
  • Slowly reduce the sugar in your tea.
  • When hungry, have fruit, roasted chana or a handful of nuts.
  • Keep drinking water through the day.
  • Start any strict diet or supplement only on the advice of a doctor or dietitian.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping meals or eating very little. It tires the body more and makes you hungrier later.
  • Watching only the weighing scale. With PCOD, weight changes slowly.
  • Comparing yourself with others. Every body’s PCOD is different.
  • Stopping medicine without asking your doctor.

How to track your progress

Don’t look only at your weight. Note your energy, sleep, mood, sugar cravings, how your clothes fit and your period pattern. These often change first, and weight follows. Check your reports with your doctor once a month.

For the full list of asanas, read yoga for PCOD. If keeping up a daily practice alone feels hard, look at the Yoga with Latu 12-week program: live Zoom classes, at most 12 women, and a PCOD / thyroid track on Saturdays. Before you start there is a health form and a call, so your practice is planned around you.
