"If I do Surya Namaskar every day, how many days until I lose weight?" We get this question on WhatsApp all the time. The straight answer: there's no fixed number, and be careful of anyone who promises one. What we can tell you is what changes, roughly when, and which mistakes stop it working.

The straight answer: how long?

How quickly your weight changes depends on what you eat, how well you sleep, how regular you are, and whether something like PCOD, thyroid or a recent delivery is involved. This is the order things usually change in:

  • First 2 to 3 weeks: more stamina and energy, better sleep, a lighter feeling in the body.
  • The next few weeks: Surya Namaskar starts to feel easier, and you can do more rounds.
  • By 12 weeks, with sensible eating: measurements and the fit of your clothes often start to change.

So don't watch only the scale. Measure your waist and hips with a tape every week too.

How many rounds a day?

  • To start: 2 to 4 slow rounds, one breath per step.
  • Add 1 or 2 rounds a week, as long as your body is fine with it.
  • Over several weeks you can reach 12 rounds. Don't rush: 4 good rounds beat 12 sloppy ones.

To learn the steps, see the 12 steps of Surya Namaskar.

Benefits of 12 Surya Namaskar a day

  • The whole body works at once: arms, legs, belly, back and shoulders.
  • The continuous flow raises your heart rate and builds stamina.
  • It builds flexibility, especially in the back and hamstrings.
  • A fixed 15-minute morning routine is a good start to the day.

The right way for the belly

  • Link every step to the breath. Speeding up without the breath only tires you out.
  • Keep the belly gently in during plank, so your lower back doesn't sag.
  • Lower slowly in Ashtanga Namaskara rather than dropping down.
  • If it's hard, keep your knees on the floor in plank and on the way down.
  • Remember that fat doesn't come off the belly alone. Whole-body movement and food together reduce belly fat. There's more in yoga to reduce belly fat.

Mistakes that stop it working

  • Rushing the rounds. The count goes up, but the form falls apart and the lower back takes the strain.
  • Holding your breath.
  • Doing it on a full stomach. Wait 2 to 3 hours after a meal, or do it on an empty stomach in the morning.
  • Doing Surya Namaskar and ignoring food.
  • Weighing yourself every day. Weight goes up and down daily, and it's discouraging.
  • Ignoring knee or back pain.

On period days, go lighter or skip Surya Namaskar (see yoga during periods). If you're pregnant, have recently delivered, have high blood pressure, or have a back or knee problem, check with your doctor first.

What to add to Surya Namaskar

Surya Namaskar is a good start, but it isn't enough on its own. Add standing poses like Utkatasana and Virabhadrasana II, protein and vegetables in every meal, and enough sleep. The full 30-minute routine is in weight loss yoga at home.

Our live class includes Surya Namaskar every day, and Latika watches your form in every round, so the mistakes don't grow as the rounds do.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if you do 12 Surya Namaskar a day?

Your whole body works, stamina and flexibility build, and with sensible eating it helps you manage your weight. Start with 2 to 4 rounds, not 12.

Should I do Surya Namaskar in the morning or evening?

Morning on an empty stomach is best. In the evening, wait 2 to 3 hours after a heavy meal.

Will Surya Namaskar alone reduce belly fat?

Not on its own. Fat comes off the whole body, so food, sleep and other poses matter alongside it.

Can I do Surya Namaskar during periods?

Go lighter or skip it on those days, and do resting poses instead. The full guide is in yoga during periods.
