The internet is full of claims like "do this pose and your hair will grow back". The truth is that no pose grows hair directly or changes your skin overnight. But stress, sleep and daily habits have a big effect on hair and skin, and yoga genuinely helps with all three.

How yoga helps

  • Ongoing stress is a common cause of hair fall. Pranayama and meditation help calm the mind.
  • The body repairs itself during good sleep. Evening yoga improves sleep for many people.
  • Poses get the body moving and the blood flowing.
  • People who do yoga every day often start paying more attention to food, water and sleep too.

Sudden heavy hair fall, bald patches, or pimples, itching or marks on the skin that do not settle can have causes like thyroid problems, anaemia, PCOD or changes after delivery. See a doctor or dermatologist first. Yoga can go alongside treatment, not replace it.

6 poses and breathing practices

  1. Balasana (Child’s Pose)Kneel, fold forward and rest your forehead on the floor. 5 to 8 breaths. It loosens the back and shoulders and calms the mind.
  2. Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Dog)Hands and feet on the floor, hips up. You can keep the knees bent. 3 to 5 breaths. Skip it if you have high BP or get dizzy.
  3. Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend)Stand and fold forward from the hips, knees slightly bent, head relaxed. 3 to 5 breaths, then come up slowly.
  4. Bhujangasana (Cobra)Lie on your stomach and lift your chest on your hands, shoulders away from the ears. 3 to 5 breaths. It opens the chest and deepens the breath.
  5. Anulom Vilom5 to 10 minutes. The simplest way to calm the mind. The full method is in the Anulom Vilom article.
  6. Bhramari5 rounds, especially before bed. The method is in the Bhramari pranayama article.

The whole set takes about 20 minutes. Do it daily rather than a lot in one day. Hair and skin change slowly, so give it at least 2 to 3 months of regular practice.

Daily habits that matter as much as the poses

  • 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night. Read yoga for sleep.
  • Enough water through the day.
  • Protein such as dal, curd, paneer, eggs or soya, plus green vegetables and fruit.
  • Protect your face when you are out in the sun.
  • Avoid tying your hair very tight and washing it with very hot water.

Frequently asked questions

Can yoga stop hair fall?

Yoga does not stop hair fall directly. If your hair fall is linked to stress or poor sleep, yoga can help. If you are losing a lot of hair, see a doctor to find the cause.

Do inversions make hair grow?

There is no solid proof of that. Learn poses like Sirshasana only from a good teacher, and avoid them with high BP, eye problems or neck pain.

How soon will my skin look different?

Every body is different. Many people notice better sleep and less stress within a few weeks, and that shows on the face too. There is no fixed timeline.

Can I do yoga for hair fall after delivery?

Yes, once your doctor says so. Hair fall after delivery often eases on its own within a few months. We have a separate article on yoga after delivery too.

This article is general information, not medical advice. If you have a health condition, an injury or are pregnant, talk to your doctor before you start yoga.
