Latika doing Naukasana (boat pose) at home

No time for the gym, or no interest? Many women choose yoga at home for weight loss, and it is a good decision. But first, a straight fact: with yoga alone, without paying attention to food, losing weight is hard. Change shows only when yoga, simple home food and enough sleep go together.

How yoga helps with weight loss

  • Surya Namaskar and flowing asanas keep the body moving and burn calories.
  • Standing and core asanas strengthen the muscles, which keeps the body more active.
  • Pranayama and relaxation reduce stress. With less stress, "stress eating" often reduces too.
  • Daily practice improves sleep, and good sleep helps keep hunger in check.

8 asanas for weight loss

  1. Surya NamaskarA full-body warm-up and cardio in one. Start with 5 rounds and build up slowly. See the steps here.
  2. Utkatasana (Chair Pose)Strengthens the thighs, hips and core. Hold for 3 to 5 breaths, and don’t let your knees go past your toes.
  3. Virabhadrasana II (Warrior 2)Legs, shoulders and stamina. Keep the front knee right above the ankle.
  4. TrikonasanaStretches the sides of the waist and the thighs. As you bend, don’t tip forward or back; stay in one straight line.
  5. Naukasana (Boat Pose)For the belly and core. Start with your knees bent. Avoid it if you have back pain.
  6. Setu Bandhasana (Bridge)Works the hips, lower back and the backs of the thighs. Don’t turn your neck.
  7. Bhujangasana (Cobra)Strengthens the back and stretches the belly. Don’t push hard on your palms; lift from the back.
  8. KapalbhatiA pranayama of forceful out-breaths that works the belly muscles. Do it on an empty stomach and start slowly. Avoid it during pregnancy, or with high BP, a heart problem, a hernia or recent abdominal surgery.

If any asana hurts, stop right there. If you have a knee, back or other health problem, talk to your doctor first and learn a modified version from a teacher.

  • Fill half your plate with vegetables and salad.
  • Cut down on sugary drinks, packaged snacks and frequent tea and biscuits.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Keep dinner light and eat it 2 to 3 hours before bed.

How much weight will I lose?

It is different for every body, so we don’t promise any number. With daily yoga and the right food, changes in energy and measurements often start to show within a few weeks. Rather than watching only the scale, also measure your waist and hips with an inch tape, and notice how your clothes fit.

After delivery, or with PCOD or thyroid, losing weight can feel harder. If you have PCOD, also read yoga for PCOD.

The Yoga with Latu 12-week program

Our 12-week weight loss yoga program is a live 50-minute class, Monday to Friday. Each week’s plan focuses on different body areas: full body, belly and core, waist-hips-legs, back and arms, and flow and pranayama. Along with it you get a simple food guide, a weekly weight and measurement check, and a progress report every 4 weeks. Each batch has only 12 women, cameras on, so every asana can be corrected.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lose weight with yoga alone?

Yoga helps, but losing weight without paying attention to food is hard. Daily yoga, simple home food and good sleep work best together.

How long should I do yoga daily for weight loss?

30 to 50 minutes of yoga, 5 days a week, is a good target. Start with 20 to 30 minutes.

Which yoga is good for belly fat?

It isn’t possible to lose fat from one spot. Surya Namaskar, core asanas such as Naukasana, and the right food together reduce overall body fat, including the belly.

When can I start weight loss yoga after delivery?

Always ask your doctor before starting yoga after delivery, especially after a C-section. Once your doctor agrees, start with gentle asanas.

This article is general information, not medical advice. If you have a health condition, an injury or are pregnant, talk to your doctor before you start yoga.
